How to mix and match different colours, patterns and textures

This coming winter it is predicted that the layered look will be in fashion again. This consists of wearing lots of different garments together and which sometimes could be all of the same colour or tone which is not too complicated to be able to master, but when it does become hard is when you have to try and mix different patterns together, for example a tweed jacket with a flowered blouse and a striped pair of trousers.

It seems almost impossible to do it without looking like a clown dressed up in patchwork clothes. Where do you start with something like this? Well firstly try and set the tones that you are looking for, let’s say tones of brown and green. When ever you think of creating an outfit for yourself you always have to start with one item and then work around it. So you have already found a tweed jacket that you like with small squares in brown, olive green and light tan and this is what you want to base everything around. Your next step is to find a pair of trousers that could go with it, and you wanted a pair with stripes on it, because that is what you saw a model wearing once, seems a bit complicated doesn’t it, but it can be done. Look for something with very fine vertical lines that has the colour olive green in it and that could have as its second colour a light tan or a brown or if you were very lucky enough all three colours. Now you have the trousers that could go with the jacket. From far away as both articles have a thin and small design they will look as if they are more or less the tone and when viewed on close up all the colours will match even though one item has squares and the other stripes. Now you are left with the last choice which is for the blouse. If you think it is just too much to look for a flowered blouse that would match you could give up and just opt for a white blouse which would finish off the whole outfit quite well but if you want to be a bit daring go for it and try.
